ConCarolinas and Project Organic Chemistry

Hello interwebs,

So, I've had a day to recover and get some sleep after ConCarolinas and I can definitely say I had a blast! :) From larping to catching up with old friends, eating at some interesting restaurants, and making new friends, I'd dub this con as being one of my favorites (although I've only been to 3 so I guess that's not really saying much).

Anyway, I managed to pull what I am now calling a Johnny Fairplay and made even my best friend feel guilty while larping and actually tricked some people this time around.  Being a super-secret-thief-who's not really a princess was pretty fun. :) Now I just have to think of which super-villain I would like to be next year.

Other fun things that happened included meeting [info]dancingdragon3! She definitely inspired Michelle and I to start writing again..now I just have to figure out what I want to write about..

In other news...

I've been working on this..thing(?)..that I have lovingly named: Project Organic Chemistry.  In an effort to not be completely confused in the fall I have decided to take initiative and teach myself organic chemistry.  In addition to that, I am going to build a website that would include notes, virtual flashcards, practice problems and answers, and a bunch of other useful doo-dads for learning orgo..should be fun.  And in an effort to force myself to resume blogging, I will be blogging about the process and general life things here on a (maybe) every other day-weekly basis.  Anyway, I'm off to get science-y.

Love always,
Alyssa

Finishing up Freshman Year
middle school
[info]lizzie29483
Let me just start off by saying this has been a phenomenal year (as I sip my hot chocolate and coffee wake me up in the wee hours of the morning beverage). So much has happened and I would be lying if I said living in New York City hasn't changed/affected me in some way. But, because I'm on a mission to finish my work earlier tonight and be well rested for tomorrow, I'm going to make this short. :)

Anyway, I guess one of the hardest parts about living in the city is living so far from home. I miss my family and friends (especially my best friend [info]rtwofan ). But also, everything here is "so gosh darn expensive."  Over the course of this year, I went from thinking that one day I would be a brilliant neural surgeon to knowing I'm going to make an amazing forensic anthropologist (note the positiveness :)  ).  It's crazy, one minute you think you have everything figured out and that you know who you are and what you want to be, and then somewhere along the way, the lines blur and you realize that your heart truly lies in another field.  For me, that field is anthropology.  I love my anthropology classes and I wonder if I would've realized that without the help of some amazing friends.

So other things that have happened this year: I thought I was going to be dying in about 30 years...Recently (last week actually) the renovators searching my residence hall found asbestos in my boyfriends room.  So pretty much immediately we all started freaking out (including me, because I practically live in there--sleep in there every night) and no one would tell us anything.  So of course, we had every right to freak out I supposed.  Anyway, about 3 days later (and with the help of me freaking out/crying and getting my RA involved) we were finally given exact numbers and information.  It turns out that while there was asbestos, it was at a significantly low concentration, and we should have nothing to worry about.  Yay for life! :)

For a few months now, I've begun to question my faith in humanity, ironically, from a mandatory writing class that everyone here loathes (and that's an understatement).. But, alas I'll have to write more on that later..chem lab is calling my name.

With Love,
Alyssa

Coming in the next issue: more on a lack of faith in humanity, a beginning doubt of religion, some crazy adventure stories, and a new boy toy ;)

Good Morning

[info]lizzie29483
:) It's been months!! Anyway since I last updated I've loved and lost and lived a lot. Ironically I don't want to talk about any of it on my LJ. So...what's new with me?? I've gotten into every school I've applied to!! (Well I haven't heard back from NYU yet but I'm not really counting that one because I won't hear from them until April anyway) Now I just have to figure out where I want to go..it's so crazy because I just want to get out and experience life and I kind of want to do it somewhere I've never been yet the school almost down the road from me is the one that I keep getting drawn too..I guess I'll figure it out eventually though :)

Hmm what else?? I've had this weird virus that turned into an infection thing for about a week now..and I think I'd be getting over it faster except I can't really eat so I'm loosing a lot of weight and not getting better :/ Well I'm feeling a little better today but I still kinda wish food were an option. Ha

I think I've been avoiding fandom and LJ and people in general and I'm not quite sure why..but I'm coming back..not sure about the fandom part yet just because I'm always so busy but I definitely miss spending time with my friends..

Valentine's Day was..interesting. The I guess now ex-boyfriend (Ryan) wanted me to see a movie with him so I said yes but then decided it was a bad idea literally as I was walking out the door..soooo I went to get some weird Italian coffee drink thing with Michelle (because Starbucks was CRAZY) and then I went to see Wolfman with Greg..yeah that movie was...idk odd is a good word to describe it.

Oooh mail's here :):) I'll try and post more later or tomorrow or something...plus I have a pile of Calc work the size of Mt.Everest soooo. Ta ta for now

No More Psychology :(
middle school
[info]lizzie29483
Well I finished my psychology class today with a brutal final. I don't think I did bad on it but there were a few questions that ended with me just generally like what?..but that's probably because my professor didn't write it so the wording was odd to me. I celebrated by eating a Christmas cookie and making pasta..yum :)

Well, gotta head out to school again. My director wants me to work with the sopranos and altos today so I get to use the nice shiny baby grand piano. Yay!! I absolutely love this piano. It's amazing. Wish me luck on getting about 35-40 girls to rehearse and on my calc exam :)

Oh and I have a new secret loving of Frasier..probably because it's the only thing on at 10 AM.

Bonjour and Gracias

Hi,

Just wanted to say thanks to [info]realynn8 and [info]paynesgrey for the virtual snowflakes. Muchas gracias :)

Finally had my Astronomy final last night and I finished the class with an A I think so I'm very glad about that. Now I just have to take my Psychology final tomorrow and pray for a B in my calculus class and I can enjoy my winter break. Oh and I got my first acceptance letter yesterday to a college I don't really want to go to. It's a good school but they have no music program so I really don't think I'd be happy there. I should be hearing from the other state colleges over the next few weeks and NYU won't be until April.

Oh I went to Disney World with Michelle over the past weekend and it was lots of fun. I don't understand why some people get so crazy though and I think Michelle came close to killing some children at one point too. But all in all it was a great trip :) Always fun to go on vacation with your best friend. woot!

Also, I finally watched the first 2 episodes of Glee this afternoon and I'm downloading the 3rd one now. I came in about the middle of the season and figured it might be a good time to watch the beginning. I'm already missing Heroes :( How many more days until it comes back?? I guess January is still better than April though.

Alas, time to hit the books again.

Let's Walk On Water
peter marshmellow
[info]lizzie29483
Good morning lj buddies!

So what does any science major do when she's bored during the summer?? Of course she attempts to walk on water..err almost water.  Recently I've been thinking about and have been fascinated by non newtonian fluids.  I guess the scientific definition of a non newtonian fluid would be a fluid that's viscosity is dependent/varies by applied stress.  um..basically, if you punch it, the atoms in the fluid rearrange and the "fluid" acts like a "solid" BUT if you poke it, it will act like a liquid and your hand will basically go right through it.  Anyway, I've been doing a lot of research on it and have decided I'm going to do what a lot of crazy physics majors do and actually walk on "water."  Because I'm going to do it in a kiddie pool and not just a pie container I have to do a lot of math though.  Plus I want to add food coloring/dye to it to make it look blueish and like water.  It's actually not that hard to make.  All I need is a lot of cornstarch and a lot of water.  The cornstarch makes it grayish so I think adding blue dye to it would make it look more like water. (P.S. I've been bugging Michelle with this info all week so she's probably tired of hearing about it)

Next week I plan on going through with this (provided my schedule doesn't conflict with it) and I'm going to try and videotape it.  I think it should end up being quite cool actually.  I might some teachers up at the local college to check my math and make sure i'm doing everything right.  I'm working on a math problem too which my mom says I should get an adviser for.  Part of this is for an independent study thing I'm doing. (yeah on top of all the work I've been doing with my label)..gosh this entry is getting kind of non-interesting to the non-nerds in my life I guess..so that's it for the academics. lol

Umm well looks like it's time to go get breakfast :) (I'll write more when I get home..

Love you,
Alyssa

In North Carolina
middle school
[info]lizzie29483
Hey!
So Michelle and I are in North Carolina for ConCarolinas! It doesn't actually start until tomorrow though so today we kind of took it easy.  We got in and wandered around the hotel for a while and then got unpacked and went to this Japanese restaurant for dinner.  Normally I hate sushi, but I figured I'd give it a try so I got this shrimp sushi thing on the side to try and it was actually pretty good.  As usual, there was tons of leftovers.  That's how it always seems to be when I get Japanese food.

We had a second epic pillow fight a few minutes ago.  We took these really long throw pillows and were fighting with them to epic songs (like from Pirates and some random other epic movies).  (yes I'm aware of how many times I said epic in that last sentence.)  Oh and it was pouring earlier so yeah. got soaked coming from the shopping area to the hotel.

Michelle is now giggling insanely and I must get back to this biology test.

Ciao!
Alyssa
